Photoshop CS3 is a software program that is part of Adobe’s Creative Suite. Although Photoshop CS4 has been released, a later version of the software, many people still use the CS3 version. Create a new layer. You will change the color of the item in the new layer so that you do not change the original image and can easily revert back to the original image. Click “Layer” on the top of the program. Then click “New” and then “Layer.”

Select the item you want to change by using the “Lasso” tool. The “Lasso” tool can be found in the toolbar on the left-hand side of Photoshop. Trace the outline of the item you want to change the color of. You can also use the “Quick Selection Tool,” which is located directly beneath the lasso tool. This will outline major shapes within the picture, but may be less precises than the lasso tool.

Select a color that you want to change the item to from the color palette in the left menu.

Adobe Photoshop is a viable tool for digital artists with the addition of more powerful drawing tools introduced in the Creative Suite version. Photoshop makes it more straightforward for artists to color their line drawings with options in the layers menu, and even includes the ability to shade sketches with the Airbrush tool. - Open the drawing you wish to shade in Photoshop by clicking on the “File” menu and choosing “Open.” Navigate to the file you want to open, highlight it and then click “Open.”

Create a new layer by clicking on the “Create a new layer” button in the “Layers” pane. This will isolate your shading to a single layer so that it is easier to remove if you make a mistake.

Select the “Paintbrush” tool. Open the “Brush” drop down menu and choose a very soft brush (for example, one with 0 percent hardness). Set the “Flow” to 50 percent and click on the “Airbrush” icon on the right side of the toolbar. If you are using a mouse or trackpad, you may also want to lower the opacity to 50 percent so that errant lines are less noticeable.

Select black as the foreground color, or press the D key on your keyboard.

Click and drag your cursor over the areas of your drawing you wish to shade. The softness of the brush, light flow and airbrush effect will produce a soft, gray tone that can be gradually built up for darker shading, just like a real pencil.

Use the “Eraser” tool to remove mistakes. Because your shading is on a different layer, the drawing underneath will remain untouched.

If you are using a drawing tablet with pressure sensitivity, Photoshop can interpret the pressure you apply to the tablet in a variety of ways. The best setting to use for pressure when shading is to adjust flow. This option will be available in the “Brush” menu if you have a pressure sensitive drawing tablet connected to your computer.

Set the Eraser tool to 50 percent flow to use the eraser like a tortillion. A tortillion is a tool used by artists to remove graphite from paper, softening the effect of shading.

Use the “Smudge” tool in the same way you might use your thumb to blend shaded areas together on a real sketch.
Broken links in a PDF file are easy to fix, either in the application in which the original document was created or in Adobe Acrobat. In Adobe’s Creative Suite programs, hyperlinks created in InDesign are not active within that program, and can be tested only after exporting the document as a PDF.
- Define the link in the original document using the application that created it, such as Microsoft Word, and in the hyperlink menu correct the target address. Export again as a PDF file to replace the previous version.

Use Acrobat instead if you have only the PDF version of the document or to avoid switching back and forth between applications.

Click on the Links tool, an icon with two links of chain. All existing links will be highlighted with a rectangle in the PDF document.

Double-click on the broken link, and in the Link Properties menu that opens, click on “Open a web link” under “Actions,” then click “Edit.”

Correct the link address in the “Edit URL” box that opens, then click “OK.”

Use the Links tool to add links that did not transfer over from the original document. With the cursor now in the shape of a cross hair, draw a rectangle around the text or object you wish to make a link.

Select the link action “Go to a page view,” “Open a file,” “Open a web page,” or “Custom Link.” Click “Next.” For a webpage, enter a URL in the box that opens.

For a document you may wish wish to edit further or use again, it’s better to fix the link in the original application. That way if you make other changes, all your changes will be exported to the PDF version.

Digital books have created a new line of electronics such as e-book readers. Digital books capture text in a format where words and context cannot be changed. - Download and install PDF printer software to your computer. There are free software programs as well as paid programs. Adobe Acrobat is one of the paid programs and probably the best known. You will need administrator rights to install new software.

Open your word processing program and either create a new file or open an existing file.

Format the file as if you were going to print it, which is what you are going to do. The difference is that you are not printing it to paper but to a file.

Select the PDF printer that you installed, name the file, and complete the printing process by clicking “Print” or “OK,” as required by your specific software. You now have text in a digital book format.

Guides are used in Adobe Photoshop, as well as in Adobe’s other Creative Suite programs, such as InDesign and Illustrator. Guides can be positioned on a document to help position items in a precise location and align two items or selections. You can place as many guides as you want on a Photoshop document. Photoshop allows you to toggle between showing and hiding guides, lock them in position and move them to a new location.
